Iga-yaki Cup, Unglazed
£42
An unglazed cup of rough Iga clay, dark with a bronze shimmer, from the Mashino kiln in Mie.
Iga-yaki goes back more than 1,200 years. Its clay is full of tiny pebbles, which give these cups their rough surface, and left unglazed it fires to a deep, dark tone flecked with bronze.
A new unglazed cup can be porous enough to let a little water through. That stops with regular use as the clay seals itself. If it doesn’t, soak the cup in starch water for a few hours and let it dry completely.
